Does LASIK safe for long-term?

If everyone are following my blog, I'm sure that most of you understand and have your own views what is Lasik all about. My previous post shared knowledge for everyone to consider undergo this surgery or not. After I shared my experience having this surgery, a friend of mine ask a question.."I don't believe you can see after 10 minutes of surgery and the procedures only took less than 15 minutes". Well this is what happen to me and the rest of us who opted to have this surgery. This are some of the questions that people may ask and sometimes is hard to explain within minutes you can see the world clearly without having glasses anymore. Anyway, I would like to share views from the expert that I've read from Foxnews. com/health on the long term effect after doing Lasik.

As this technology started in early 1990's, there are patients has been undergo with this treatment 18 and 19 years ago and they mentioned that their vision still perfect although they choose to use this kind of treatment during early days and using blades. This proof that Lasik does gave a long-term results.

In 2008, a Spanish researcher has produce a study by following 70 Lasik patients for almost 10 years to know the effect on vision towards this treatment. His finding was these patient had healthy corneas and their vision remained accurate. The study also indicate that the procedure is safe and the technology used is effectively  efficient.

So, these are some of the opinion from the expert that I would like to share and at the same time would like people who are interested to know about Lasik to think carefully before making any decision. As for me, the only issues was the dryness at the early stage but with eye drops it help. Other than feeling happy playing football without a wearing glass on it, I've enjoy to have numbers of other activities. It raised my confident level and I feel that sometime decision that we make does make our life changed.

I'll share my thought and opinion from people out there about Lasik in other post. By the way, I'm not promoting any doctors, clinics or hospital for this surgery by I'm sharing my views from experience that I've got for people to know about this treatment and think precisely before making any decision.

See everyone on next post. Take a very good care of your eyes. It is most precious gift from god!

What is Lasik all about...

These are some of the information that I would like to share all about Lasik Eye Surgery. Its good to know how does the procedures gonna be. Once we know all about Lasik, making decision is another challenging thing. So, think wisely before you made the decision and before that, enjoy reading!

LASIK, which stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis, is a popular surgery used to correct vision in people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism.
All laser vision correction surgeries work by reshaping the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, so that light traveling through it is properly focused onto the retina located in the back of the eye. LASIK is one of a number of different surgical techniques used to reshape the cornea.

What Are the Advantages of LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK has many benefits, including:
·    It corrects vision. Around 96% of patients will have their desired vision after LASIK. An enhancement can further increase this number.
·      LASIK is associated with very little pain due to the numbing drops that are used.
·      Vision is corrected nearly immediately or by the day after LASIK.
·      No bandages or stitches are required after LASIK.
·      Adjustments can be made years after LASIK to further correct vision if vision changes while you age.
After having LASIK, most patients have a dramatic reduction in eyeglass or contact lens dependence and many patients no longer need them at all.

How LASIK Works
The LASIK procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, medical doctors who specialize in surgical treatments of the eye.  Here is a general outline of the procedure:
·      Anesthetic eye drops are applied to the eye.

·      The LASIK surgeon creates a protective flap to access the inner corneal tissue. During this part of the procedure, your vision dims and becomes blurry for about a minute.  After the flap is created you are able to see the flashing fixation light of the laser and the bright lights used for the procedure.

·      Next the inner layers of your cornea receive computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light. Although the laser light is invisible, the laser makes a clicking sound as it gently reshapes the inner corneal layer to improve and in many cases, eliminate your prescription. During this part of the procedure, an eye-tracking device tracks your eye movements to ensure precise correction.

·      Following the re-shaping of the tissue, the LASIK surgeon carefully repositions and aligns the flap to its original position. Protective shields are placed over your eye to prevent accidental rubbing as the flap heals naturally and securely over the next several hours.
·      After the LASIK eye surgery procedure, patients feel moderate discomfort and irritation for a few hours, but most are comfortable after a nap and rest.

How Should I Prepare for LASIK Eye Surgery?
Before LASIK eye surgery, you will meet with a coordinator or eye surgeon who will discuss what to expect during and after the procedure. During this session, your medical history will be evaluated and your eyes will be fully examined. Likely initial tests include measuring corneal thickness, refraction, corneal mapping, air pressure, and pupil dilation. Once you have gone through the initial evaluation, you will meet the surgeon, who will answer any questions you may have. Afterwards, you can schedule an appointment for the procedure.
If you wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses, you should not wear them for at least three weeks before your evaluation. Other types of contact lenses shouldn't be worn for at least three days prior to the evaluation. Be sure to bring your eyeglasses to the surgeon so your prescription can be reviewed.

On the day of your surgery, eat a light meal before going to the doctor and take all of your prescribed medications. Do not wear eye makeup or have any bulky accessories in your hair that will interfere with positioning your head under the laser. If you are not feeling well that morning, call the doctor's office to determine whether the procedure needs to be postponed.

I hope my sharing will help in making decisions.

See U in other post.

Experience from LASIK EYE patience

It was a full house when we organize the eye screening and public talk by our volunteers doctors last week. We share so many thing with the participants and there are people who still consider to have Lasik surgery but not sure if they would go for this treatment. This talk has provide them with extra knowledge not only how to take care of our eyes but to know all about Lasik eye surgery. Most of them know that if they proceed with the surgery, there will not be any u-turn and they need to know everything prior for them to make any decision. Some of them who has issue on poor vision, has gain useful knowledge how to take care of their eye and what are the treatment available to help them improve their vision.

During this event, I managed to talk and share with people who has undergo Lasik eye surgery. Mr. Hisham Nor who has done this surgery a year ago share some of his experience. He said that he only read information on Lasik via the Internet. From his reading he knows a bit what are Lasik all about and after a while he made his decision to have this surgery. His issue after the surgery was the dryness of his eyes. The doctor who's doing this surgery does not inform him the consequences but only told him that his vision will be normal within a month. The dryness continues until now and to overcome it he will ensure to avoid places that has a lot of dust. After a year, this issue still continue and he has to bring along eye drop everywhere he go. He would like to advice anyone to ask a few doctor and not just reading it over the Internet.

I also met Mr. Arul who has undergo this surgery more than 6 month. He informed that his vision was better than before and having dryness only for 3 month and he's happy on his vision now. The most important for him was he does not need to wear glasses anymore. This make him happy after the Lasik surgery. His advice was prior to make any decision, do a lot of homework and ask a least 3 doctors on the implications and advantages of Lasik eye surgery.

My opinion was, the public need to be inform what is the advantages and disadvantages of Lasik eye surgery. This is to avoid people misunderstood this technology does not gave an equal vision for them. This surgery corrects our left eye for farsighted and right eye for shortsighted. If we're willing to have this kind of vision, you may do so but if we think that its not worthy, we have contact lenses and glasses as our alternative.

Think wisely before you make any decision.

Which visual aids are the best?

Sometimes we are gifted with good pair of eyes and there are people need some visual aids such as contact lenses or a pair of glasses to improve our vision. There are people who are lazy wearing / using these visual aids and just continue with their lives although they know their vision was not perfect. Some people choose to wear glasses to improve their vision but at the end it is our choice what use and wear as long as we are comfortable with it. As time goes on technologies has been develop especially for people choose not to wear any visual aids. Lasik eye surgery is the technology that has been invented to help people who choose not to wear any visual aids.
Lasik stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, which means using a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis). This procedure utilizes a highly specialized laser (excimer laser) designed to treat refractive errors, improve vision, and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. This laser procedure alters the shape of the cornea, which is the transparent front covering of the eye. Though the excimer laser had been used for many years before, the development of LASIK is generally credited to Ioannis Pallikaris from Greece around 1991.
Eye is gifted to us from god and we need to take care for this valuable organ. It is us who decide in what way to correct our vision. Before you decide which ever visual aids you need to especially when comes to Lasik, it is good that you make some research and homework or ask a doctor before you decide if you need to have a Lasik surgery. Find whatever information and knowledge and throw questions to people that has been undergo this Lasik eye surgery before you decide which is the best for your eyes.

Good Luck!

Protect Your Eyes...Tips To Follow

To ensure we live in a healthy environment, we eat and exercise to make sure our body is fit in continuing our daily routine. We are focus on our body but does we concern on how to protect our most valuable organs – our eyes? Eyes are delicate and precious and with the touch of maintenance it will keep them going for years. Like a car. If we take care of the maintenance it takes us more kilometers. Here, I would like to share some of the tips on how to protect our eyes.

  • Invest in a pair of good quality sunglass. Your eyes are worth it. Polarized (selectively blocks direct sunlight and its reflections) sunglasses are better than merely dark sunglasses.
  • Never stare into direct sunlight or at any object reflecting the sun's rays.
  • It is also important to not stare into darkness; this can damage your eyes as well. Be sure to either close your eyes or use a flashlight in the dark.
  • Go to your doctor and get a vision test approximately every 6 months.
  • Use eye drops as directed for itchy, watery, dry, or red eyes. Don’t use your hand to avoid itchiness.
  • Protect your eyes from eye strain when at the computer or watching television. If you are watching television, make sure you have good distance from the screen. As for computer, try to stay at a distance (which might help to reduce, avoid or mitigate nearsightedness over time), be sure to keep blinking, and look away every now and then. A laptop should be on the lap or some distance away on a low desk, slid back on a desk, or on a keyboard drawer, not close in front of the face lying prone on a bed.
  • When reading keep some distance from a book, which might reduce strain or mitigate nearsightedness.
  • When doing anything that may get particles or fumes in your eyes, be sure to wear protective glasses/goggles. Ensure that there is a water source nearby to wash out contaminants that do get in the eyes. Do not wear contact lenses in these situations as they can hold contaminants in.
  • Clean those eyes. If anything that isn't completely sterile/clean gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediately
  • Be sure to get plenty of sleep so your eyes don't strain to stay open during the day.
  • Lastly, never rub your eyes. This is what normally causes eye infections, because the bacteria on your hands/fingers get between your eyelids.

When we find some difficulties in our vision either farsighted or nearsighted, it is an indication that we need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Prior to this, please ensure that we take good care of our most valuable organ – our eyes. Although there is a technology to correct our eyes through LASIK but we need to practice these steps in protecting our eyes.

Look Beyond Our Mind...

During my secondary school, my activities was limited because my glasses stop me to do a lot of things. I like to play football and other activities that usually a 'kampung boy' do but my glasses stop me to enjoy such activities. I remember one time when I was ready to play football in my 'kampung' somebody say 'hey u! you can't play with your glasses on. Just watch us playing ok.' This has stops me to enjoy my beloved sport activity and I try to be a goalkeeper but still I lost a lot of ball into the net. I have to admit that my glasses gave me the look beyond the border but I can't force my mind to enjoy my favorite sports.

Until October 2013, after doing a lot of thinking and ask people's opinion, I've decided to have my Lasik. I've numbers of reason doing this surgery but my aim is to play football without wearing glasses anymore. After more than 20 years, I'm now free from glasses except sunglass. After a month, I've started to actively playing football and I've now have my own team. This is what I would say..look beyond our mind..I always think that one day I'll free myself from wearing glasses and it came true.

This blog I created is to share and guide the public what is Lasik Eye Surgery all about. I'm not promoting the services but sharing on things to consider prior having this surgery. I hope that by posting information related to our eyes and Lasik, it will help and guide anyone who choose to undergo this surgery.

Happy reading guys.
